Pfeiffer University — L-73
From a small mission school to a university in northern Stanly.
The longer story.
Pfeiffer traces its beginning to Emily C. Prudden’s Oberlin Home and School, founded near Lenoir in 1885. The Methodist Episcopal Church’s Women’s Home Missionary Society assumed responsibility in 1903, and the institution became the Ebenezer Mitchell Home and School. After a fire and temporary relocation, it moved to Misenheimer in 1910, according to the state marker essay.
The institution added a junior-college curriculum in 1928 and adopted the Pfeiffer name in the 1935–1936 academic year to honor benefactors Henry and Annie Merner Pfeiffer. It began senior-college work in 1960. The university’s own history dates the trustees’ reorganization toward university status to May 1996.
The marker compresses that long sequence into founding, relocation and renaming. The university account supplies the academic changes between those milestones. Reading them together helps distinguish an institution’s original founding from the beginning of its present campus and the adoption of its current name.

How to read this place.
A school can preserve an institutional identity across changes in place, name and educational level. This timeline deliberately shows those changes separately. It does not imply uninterrupted university-level instruction since 1885. Compare the marker with the present Schools & Education guide to see how a historical institution participates in a current county education landscape.
