Stanly County Library
A library whose earlier homes trace the town’s civic geography.
The longer story.
The library marker records a public library founded in 1916 in the Albemarle Community Building. The Albemarle Women’s Club and private donations helped support it, followed by town funding. In 1927 it became a joint city-county undertaking and moved into Hotel Albemarle.
In 1939 the library moved to a slate-stone building constructed by the Works Progress Administration near the courthouse, on land now associated with Courthouse Square Park. The current library was dedicated in 1972 on the site of the county’s second and third jails. One institution therefore connects several of this directory’s historic locations.

How to read this place.
Follow the institution rather than only the building. A library’s changing addresses can reveal how communities organized public services and reused central land. The women’s club and donation history also points beyond government to civic participation. For family research, use the library and History Center as separate institutions with different collections, and check each institution’s current research arrangements.
