Maralise Hotel site
A vanished hotel beside the railroad-era downtown.
A site beyond the HMdb list.
Albemarle’s December 2022 announcement includes the Maralise Hotel site in its ten-stop historical marker program. The city identifies 213 West Main Street and describes the building as demolished. The Historical Society’s walking tour dates completion to 1908, closure to 1965 and demolition to 1968.
Operated by Alice Mabry, the hotel had 28 rooms and a restaurant near the railroad station, according to the tour. The site is now described as parking. This is a related documented historic site beyond the supplied HMdb set; a current photograph confirming the physical marker’s installation was not located.

How to read this place.
A building’s absence can be historically meaningful. Compare the former hotel site with the surviving Albemarle Hotel: both served travel and social life, but only one retains its historic building. A present parking area should not be illustrated as if the vanished hotel still stood. Use the linked walking-tour archive for the historic image and distinguish the historic address from a current visitor entrance.
